Lea Michele May Star in "Funny Girl" on Broadway, Mirroring Her Glee Character
Seven years after the finale of the hit show "Glee," insiders have shared that actress Lea Michele is being considered as a strong contender to replace Beanie Feldstein's role as Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl" on Broadway. Her obnoxious character on Glee, Rachel Berry, spent the majority of the show pining after this same Broadway role, eventually having her fictional Broadway debut at the end of Season 5. Subsequently, "Glee" fans have been desperate for Michele to take on the role in real life, considering her dedication to the musical and her admiration for Barbra Streisand on the show.
While Lea Michele is most well-known for her time working on "Glee," she graced the Broadway stage in the production of "Spring Awakening" three years before the show's airing, alongside her later Glee coworker, Jonathan Groff. Her strong vocals were put on display in almost every episode of "Glee," with Rachel Berry frequently performing songs from "Funny Girl," demonstrating the powerful potential she has to inhabit this role on Broadway.
Beanie Feldstein, known primarily for her leading roles in "Booksmart" and "Ladybird," has been starring as Fanny Brice since the opening night of "Funny Girl" on April 24th, marking the first time this musical has been on Broadway in 58 years. While she has shared how incredible this experience has been for her, critics say that Feldstein does not capture the same power and energy as Barbra Streisand in the original production, and perhaps she is not Broadway material. Jane Lynch, another "Glee" star, plays the role of Mrs. Brice alongside Feldstein, but is also set to leave the production in late September with Beanie.
With this opening for a lead Broadway role, it seems likely that Lea Michele will mirror her character Rachel Berry and manage to secure the part of Fanny Brice, come September. However, despite her countless performances of "Don't Rain On My Parade," the "Funny Girl" position is still up in the air, and fans can only hope to see Michele on the stage belting her heart out in late fall.
